finally getting to taste chianti wines

Have you ever seen “Under the Tuscan Sun”? Yeah, me neither – those types of movies are just not my glass of wine. But I would imagine that it takes place in a setting like San Gimignano. Green rolling hills, quaint farmhouses, and let’s not forget the most important component – the sun.

I came here as a part of a Tuscany day tour, so my time was limited, much like Siena. But I did get a chance to visit a beautiful farm, Il Vecchio Maneggio, complete with olive groves, vineyards, and of course – wine tasting! If you’ve ever heard of Chianti wines, this is it! Well, part of it. San Gimignano is a part of the Chianti region. They’re known for their Vernaccia, which is a white wine, made from the Vernaccia grape.

After the farm, I got to walk around for a little bit in the town. It’s a small, walled medieval town that sits atop a hill. Everything looks ancient, but not in an outdated way. More like an ‘every building has an interesting story’ kind of way.

FYI – Like other small Italian villages, there are public restrooms, but they are far and few – and you’ll likely have to pay to use them (normally about 50 cents). Just something to keep in mind, especially if you are coming from an unlimited wine tasting.

While the town did have its own unique charm, that was about it. There didn’t seem to be that much to do there. If you like vino, you might want to visit the surrounding vineyards. In fact, some people even make a whole trip out of it since each region is known for its own wine. Maybe I’ll do that one day!
